Mount error

All,

 I am trying to get at my /etc/fstab file, but am getting the error below   
when I try the following:

 - mkdir /tmp/mnt
 - mount /dev/hda1 /tmp/mnt

Error: "mount: you must specify the file type"

 I'm still quite niave when it comes to Linux.  What's the proper syntax   
with 'mount'?
