Please consider a free license for tRNAscan-SE
Hello,
I'm writing you on behalf of the Debian Med team which is a group inside
Debian with the objective to package all free software that is used in
medicine and life sciences for official Debian. You might possibly know
that also tRNAscan-SE is packaged[1].
Unfortunately the trnascan-se package does not belong to the official
Debian distribution since this is not permitted by the licences of the
single file src/trnascan.c has a license that has restrictions which are
in conflict with the Debian Free Software Guidelines[2]. The "without
charge" restriction moves the software out of any distribution medium a
vendor might want to sell to users[item no. 1]. Its also lacking an
explicit permission to modify the software.
It would be really nice if you would consider using some of the well
established free licenses like GPL or BSD to enable us to provide
tRNAscan-SE in official Debian.
Thanks for considering
Andreas.
