Wolfram Mathmatica

Hi,

I recently met someone from Wolfram at our University as we've just acquired
a site license. They had a lot of liturature on using Mathmatica for
bioinformatics, medical science and medical imaging. I'm wondering if anyone
has done a comparison of Mathmatica and open-source products that would
maybe help to identify areas where commercial software exists to perform
tasks that we don't have software for in Debian.

I'm aware of Sage Mathematics[1] which pitches itself as "a viable free open
source alternative to Magma, Maple, Mathematica and Matlab" but I've not
used it for anything beyond simple statistics. Is anyone using Sage and can
comment futher on it and its suitability as an alternative?

Thanks,
Iain.
