Yes, I found this and I can confirm that it is quite easy to simply
check out the source. Hoewever, in Debian there are tools to
automatically detect and download new versions from upstream websites.
It parses the content of websites according to a regular expression
verifying the version string. This information is somehow contained
in a Git repository however, the tools are just acting on http pages.

Just uploading to the usual place googlecode is providing for this
cases a versioned tarball
phyutility-<version>.tar.gz
or bz2, zip might be fine as well if you consider non-Linux users
your main user base - just anything we can immediately from the
web page parse the version is fine.
