On the freedesktop.org distributions list we discussed the possibility
to maintain packages, that haven't any upstream anymore, together with
maintainers of other distributions. And to my knowledge there are
already some projects doing this. Maybe you want to consider to inform
the maintainers of the other distributions about your choice to take
over upstream maintenance and ask them to to form a cross-distribution
team to take over maintenence.
