Graphics compatability without requiring advanced graphics capabilities

I'm configuring a debian-live build.  I'm seeking the widest compatibility possible but don't need any advanced graphics capabilities (e.g. I don't need to run at the highest possible resolution or take advantage of any advanced features in the graphics card).

My question is- which approach am I better off taking?
  1. nomodeset and xforcevesa
  2. standard free drivers
  3. use the ati/nvidia proprietary drivers.
  4. Something else?
If the best approach is #3, I have a follow-up question.   I'm basing the live build off ubuntu 12.10 because I need it to work with UEFI secure boot and the grub/kernel in the 12.10 ubuntu distro is signed by M$. However, in 12.10, nvidia-current and fglrx conflict (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers/+bug/1071389), so I can't install both drivers into the chroot. Any ideas on a workaround or this?

Many thanks,
Corey
