the number of packages on cgipackages.list.chroot is limited to maxlength of 256. The live build would be much more helpful for me if I could enter more characters (about 700 characters) to put all of my favourite packages into the image. Why is there a limitiation?

No real reason, but I did a quick search and I could find no one who has ever asked for larger maxlength. The only other question I could find with a quick search related to maxlength was: http://lists.debian.org/debian-live/2012/03/msg00121.html

Could you change this limitation please?

I do not at the moment see why we could not increase the maxlength. It is probably best if you would file a bug if you want it increased since live-build.debian.net is running an older version of live-build.
Best wishes
