I am turning round betwen gnome-power-manager, hibernate, hal,
acpi_support ... and their man pages and other docs, but gpm doesn't
work at all.

Follow the advice given in http://acpi.sourceforge.net/

Finaly I make it work (gpm) but it doesn't run fine:
when the cursor is set to 1 minute the real time is 11 minutes.
This is corrected in the version experimentale,(it starts to 11 minutes)
but there is not hibernation proposed.

I kept the version 2.14.3-3+b1 which proposes the option hibernate, but
sometimes when I quite hibernate the machine froze.
