I did try that before my first attempt at running alsaconf, but I
think I had installaled the alsa packages before getting your
suggestion, so I'll try getting rid of them completely first...

I am doing the install on a 110, but I also have a 100 as a spare.
So far I have never found any compatability issues that stop
me swapping drives between the two..

Ok, I removed the packages using aptitude and removed /etc/alsa.
However I still seem to have quite a few alsa files lying around:
% locate alsa
/etc/apm/resume.d/20alsa
/etc/apm/scripts.d/alsa
/etc/apm/suspend.d/80alsa
/etc/default/alsa
/etc/dev.d/snd/controlC0/alsa-base.dev
/etc/dev.d/snd/controlC1/alsa-base.dev
/etc/dev.d/snd/controlC2/alsa-base.dev
/etc/dev.d/snd/controlC3/alsa-base.dev
/etc/dev.d/snd/controlC4/alsa-base.dev
/etc/dev.d/snd/controlC5/alsa-base.dev
/etc/dev.d/snd/controlC6/alsa-base.dev
/etc/dev.d/snd/controlC7/alsa-base.dev
/etc/devfs/conf.d/alsa
/etc/discover.conf.d/10alsa
/etc/discover.d/alsa-base
/etc/hotplug/blacklist.d/alsa-base
/etc/init.d/alsa
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base
/etc/modutils/alsa-base
/etc/rc0.d/K40alsa
/etc/rc1.d/K40alsa
/etc/rc2.d/S12alsa
/etc/rc3.d/S12alsa
/etc/rc4.d/S12alsa
/etc/rc5.d/S12alsa
/etc/rc6.d/K40alsa
/lib/alsa
/lib/alsa/dev
/lib/alsa/modprobe-post-install
/lib/discover/alsa-base.list.xml
/lib/discover/alsa-base.pci-device.xml
are any of those cause for concern...?
Still waiting for a kernel build I started a few hours ago to
finish before I reboot (thought I might end up needing to
put some diagnostics in...)

Thanks - i'll give it a try. In the mean time I can try to
learn a bit more about how it all fits together. I didn't
even know to look in /proc/asound...
