Luckily I have > no problems here on a T42 with Xorg 6.9.0 and 3D. I'm following the "cannot start x - ThinkPad T42" on the linux-thinkpad list. Carlos seems to have the exact same problem. Even if I use the "ati" driver instead of "radeon" it still freezes. Are you using fglrx?
