I have a T42 myself. I'm running a mixed Stable/Testing, but I might be
able to help.

For starters:

How often does this happen?

What kernel version are you running? 

Can you send me the output of the following?:
* 'X -version'
* 'lcpci -v'
* 'lsmod'

Can you attach your xorg.conf?
