Problems with SiS 7018 audio card

I have a laptop on which I have installled sid with kernel 2.4.19. The sound 
card is SiS 7018 built-in in the motherboard. I have configured
the kernel with sound card support built-in and then compiling as a module 
the support for SiS 7018, as from .config:

...
CONFIG_SOUND=y
CONFIG_SOUND_TRIDENT=m
....

Anyway, every time I try to start esound I get this error message:

murena:~# esd
/dev/dsp: No such device
----

And obviously audio is not working. What could have I forgotten, or where 
could the problem be?
