Perhaps it didn't work because you tried it as a user that was not in group 
audio?
Otherwise you can try a OSS module with maestro or allegro in the name, but 
I'm not sure.

Look for the supported cards on www.alsaproject.org

That's for midi. Not necessary for normal sound.
