I found sound unreliable directly in the kernel - it wouldn't reset after a
suspend/resume cycle. It works OK for me as a module. I've a Toshiba 490CDT
with Yamaha OPL3SA3 sound. As a module, you put the options in
/etc/modules.conf:
options -k opl3sa2 isapnp=0 io=0x538 mss_io=0x530 mpu_io=0x330 irq=5 dma=1
dma2=0 ymode=1 loopback=0

Directly in the kernel, you put the options in the boot line when you boot up
(use "append" in lilo).

Is there something similar on for your Sony? Did anything in
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/sound help?
