try 
linux ide2=0x180,0x386
when you boot from floppy
Plus check out http://www.linux-laptop.net/ and you can check out
Libretto and c1 (picturebook)sites
they have the same problem with external floppy drive.
If yo decide to go with Progeny (debian based distribution) you can
check http://155.41.134.145
