thanks to all who responded (either to the list or privately) for
their suggestions.  i will try the various approaches which make sense
to me and perhaps post the results.

as a side note, based on a response or two, i got the impression that
some of the content of my message was unclear or misleading (or i
misunderstood some response), so to clarify:

   i don't consider using DontZap acceptable for my case because it disallows
   the use of the ctrl-alt-bs sequence to terminate the x server -- the 
   reason is that *i* use that sequence often enough.
