I don't know the details of your laptop, but when xscreensaver blanks, it turns
off the backlight on many laptops, including my Vaio.  I use the Debian 2.2.17
kernel out-of-box, no different config options or modules required (unless I
want to blank it while not running X, which I just about never do).
