As many infortunate owners of LT winmodems are discovering, the ltmodem.o
works only up to 2.2.14. With higher kernels it breaks something in the 
ppp module, and when you try to use the latter the kernel panics.
Some report success using it with 2.2.15/16 by 
substituting the ppp module compiled with 2.2.15/2.2.16 with one compiled 
with 2.2.14 (with the same options). I tried but it did not work.
