Sounds like a routing problem.  
To print your routing table:
 route -n

You should have a default rule (destination 0.0.0.0), but I suspect
you don't.  If you use a static IP address, you'd set that in
/etc/pcmcia/network.opts, a few lines down from where you set your
address.
