It is normal for the card to draw whatever power it needs from the laptop.
It sounds like yours is a pretty hungry card.

Some get hotter than others;  whether your laptop has decent ventilation
counts for a lot.

I've seen Linksys cards with a big metal band near their pinside edge, which
I assume is a pretty good heatsink.
