Just an update, this seems to be realted to 2.6.x, Tulip (21041,21143) chip cards & de4x5 module.
I think this is either a kernel bug or a module under kernel 2.6 bug as there are several other reports of the exact same problem at www.knoppix.net

Seems all to be realted to the Tulip chips
Mine are 21041 and reports of 21142/43 theres a third I am trying to find out the exact make of the card to see if its tulip based.
So I've emailed: davies@maniac.ultranet.com about the de4x5 module and possibly an issue with it under 2.6.x
