Speaking of frame-buffer mode, I am working on intergrating the lpp patch into
knoppix. The lpp patch ( http://lpp.freelords.org/ - outdated website.. )
adds a framebuffer progress bar to the bootup.

I have successfully tested this on a remastered knoppix, I had to patch the
kernel and add lots of ' echo "60 item" > /proc/progress' to
knoppix-autoconfig. That sets the percentage to 60. The knoppix wallpaper
suits a progress bar quite nicely.

It supports warning and error icons, so if the autoconfig needs user
intervention it can put a waring / error icon on the screen.

I'm not sure how useful/stable this will be, but I thought it'd give it a go.
