Package: src:linux
Version: 4.19.67-2
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

The panel_ignore_lid parameter is no longer available in the i915
module, even as an "unsafe" variable. Could you please help to get it
restored?

I am using a laptop with a video card supported by the i915 kernel
module. When I was using Debian 9, I ran into a frustrating problem
where the HDMI video output would often stay completely black after
changing resolutions. If I kept changing resolutions (for several
minutes), it would randomly come back on. From then on, it would keep
working, as long as the resolution never changed.

Using Linux 4.9, I was happy when I found that there is a fix for the
problem: setting i915.panel_ignore_lid=-1 at boot time (or changing
the parameter at run time in /sys/module/i915/parameters) would cause
the external monitor to always work properly.

However, when I upgraded to Debian 10, with Linux 4.19, the problem
returned. After investigation, it appears that that setting is
completely missing!

    i915: unknown parameter 'panel_ignore_lid' ignored

There is no obvious replacement for it. I read through the i915 git
changelog and found the point where panel_ignore_lid was marked as
"unsafe" (setting it would taint the kernel). I didn't see any
mention, however, of why the variable would have been removed
completely.

I did come across an instance where a developer had accidentally
broken a feature, but since nobody complained, they figured nobody
cared and deleted the whole feature. I hope that doesn't happen to the
'panel_ignore_lid' parameter as it is essential for this particular
system.

The laptop is an HP Pavilion x360 m1 Convertible. It has an Intel
CherryTrail HD Graphics device (0x8086, 0x22B1). The built-in screen
died shortly after purchase — which is why it is plugged into an HDMI
monitor.
