Bug#816377: vmxnet3 LRO IPv6 performance issues (stalling TCP)

Hi,

short history on this:

We run a pretty large VMware infrastructure. In November 2014 we migrated the
hardware the cluster runs on

Old: HP BL490c Gen6, Flex10 something, BCM57711E
New: HP BL460c Gen8, HP FlexFabric 630FLB, BCM57840

We immediately saw huge performance issues with TCPv6 connections (to the point
of being absolutely unusable even for basic tasks) on machines that had already
migrated to the new hardware. Migrating the machine back to the old hardware
immediately fixed the issue.

This was eventually traced down to vmxnet3 enabled Linux VMs with "old"
drivers, in this case Debian Wheezy with vmxnet3 1.1.19, having issues with
LROv6. Apparently the new NIC chipset in the host supports LROv6, while the old
one didn't. Disabling LRO fixed the issue.

Back then neither the vmxnet3 module from the official VMware-Tools (1.1.35)
nor the in-kernel version in Testing/Jessie (1.2.0.0) exhibited the problem, so
it was decided to run the Wheezy systems with the official VMware module and
keep the in-kernel module for Jessie.

Fast Forward:

Lately we have received reports about this issue resurfacing on Jessie systems.
Or normal workload does not seem to be affected that bad, but we have
identified two tasks where it is easily reproducible

 - Inbound Debian mirror sync (rsync from syncproxy.eu) over IPv6
 - iperf3 IPv6 towards a virtual machine (server on the VM).

Disabling LRO fixes the issue.

Kernel 4.3 from backports with vmxnet3 1.4.2.0 does not fix this issue.

Any idea how to debug this further? We'll disable LRO for now, but I would be
really grateful for any pointers on how to debug this.
