Dear Maintainer,

(I don't know, if this report may be a duplicate, the search on bdo is down and i think this bug is important enough to file it anyway...)

on a fresh install of stable (jessie), the disk was completely filled up when I just let the system sit for some days. Turned out the problem was in /var/log, which is on / in this install (there is a helpful disk-full-analyze-tool in the default install after all). I had to forcefully remove syslog, daemon.log, kern.log and messsages and reboot the system to get it run again.

These files are still growing... After the reboot it the biggest entries in /var/log are:

 12:08:27 up 18 min, 3 users, load average: 3,81, 3,70, 2,69

-rw-r----- 1 root adm 34620838 Jan 31 11:56 messages.1
-rw-r----- 1 root adm 64654062 Jan 31 12:06 messages
-rw-r----- 1 root adm 67676079 Jan 31 11:56 daemon.log.1
-rw-r----- 1 root adm 70985143 Jan 31 11:56 kern.log.1
-rw-r----- 1 root adm 115802658 Jan 28 00:45 syslog.1
-rw-r----- 1 root adm 126748675 Jan 31 12:06 daemon.log
-rw-r----- 1 root adm 132827805 Jan 31 12:06 kern.log
-rw-r----- 1 root adm 398285263 Jan 31 12:06 syslog

The disk is not too small:
/dev/dm-1 110289760 5373368 99290948 6% /

(It grew from 5% to 6% in these 20 minutes).

The problem is this repeating message:
[ 1216.474108] iwl3945 0000:05:00.0: Direct firmware load failed with error -2
[ 1216.474111] iwl3945 0000:05:00.0: Falling back to user helper

I even installed firmware-linux-free, but this didn't help.

If the firmware is non-free, the kernel should be aware that this firmware could be missing, and not spam the logs. I don't see a way to run a completely free system on this hardware without disabling syslog. When I installed the non-free firmware-iwlwifi the messages stopped, of course, but as you know you have to actively include non-free ans find this package for that. Less technical users would just have decided debian is not viable for them, I suppose...

Thanks for your good work!

Ralf
