I made three such
      installations, where I saw this issue. The last one used kernel 
      3.16.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.16.7-ckt11-1 (2015-05-24) x86_64
      GNU/Linux (that of the 8.1.0 (amd64) DVD1 iso image), 
      the other two used the kernel of the 8.0.0 (amd64) 4 GB iso image. 
      Another, perhaps useful observation: the installation of Ubuntu
      14.04.2 (amd64, Gnome) worked fine (as tested on one server).

Can you confirm what version of the kernel you were using?  This
sounds like it's an device driver issue, so we need to redirect this
bug report to the appropriate kernel package.
