Ben, is it too late in the Wheezy release cycle to backport the "rtl8723ae" 
driver?

Yes you are ! But note that the debian-kernel mailing list is not the best
place to keep track of bug reports. So please next time use the "reportbug"
tool ;-)

Yes, a newer version of initramfs-tools is needed on your system because 
since linux 3.8.2-1~experimental.1, the *minimum* version of initramfs-tools 
has been increased to 0.110~

What method did you use to upgrade your kernel?
