This seems to be specific to 2.6.39. I reverted to:
Linux xvii 2.6.38-2-amd64 #1 SMP Sun May 8 13:51:57 UTC 2011 x86_64 GNU/Linux
(linux-image-2.6.38-2-amd64 2.6.38-5), and did many suspend/resume
for several days, and I didn't have a single freeze.
