Bug#593507: linux-image-2.6.32-5-686: screen blank with KMS on Intel i830
Package: linux-2.6
Version: 2.6.32-20
Severity: normal
Tags: upstream
Re: Bug #593432 (please merge if appropriate)
No, this is not a regression from an earier version of 2.6.32, it has been happening since switching from UML to KMS
and from my understanding is due to the inteldrmframbuffer needing more than 8 megs of video ram and the intel virtual memory functions
not working yet with i830... I will be checking to see if the i965-va-xxxxxx package fixes any of this as a next step....
I'll attach dmesg.mode1 and xorg.log.mode1 from my xsession with KMS on.
When booting with KMS on I get a terminal screen with only the backlight working (a faint glow is visable but no text is visable)
If I login a user and startx the faint glow turns to black until I switch to VT2 ( faint glow returns to screen in virtual terminal with X running on VT7)
If I add i915.modeset=0 to the kernel commadline at boot I get both a usable termainl and xsession ( see attachments dmesg.mode0 and xorg.log.mode0)
( "nomodeset" does not work as an optional kernel command any more... this seems to be a regression from 2.6.32-3 (iirc))
I have installed both 2.6.34 and 2.6.35 but they no longer allow KMS to be switched off and the drmframebuffer still shows a blank or backlite only screen
in the terminal and a blank screen with an xsession running.
I've installed every relevent package from experimental I could find.
Everything was working fine except KMS was off...
