In version 2.6.26-21 I updated the initialisation code for this specific
variant of the RTL8169, which was supposed to fix a bug (I'm not sure
exactly what that was). However, it has now been found that there is
another bug in the driver that can cause this initialisation code to
fail. This seems to explain the unreliability you are seeing.

I will apply the fix that has been accepted for the latest Linux
version.
