This generally should work but since you've left it so late to upgrade most people will have forgotten about the 'gotchas' and you won't get a lot of support with the upgrade. Any preinst script will be installed as /var/lib/dpkg/info/<package-name>.preinst. However, the official kernel packages for etch didn't use preinst scripts.
