without hal no external hard-disk, no floppy, no dvd - well - no good!
so i tried to start hald by hand. i got:
hald --verbose=yes --daemon=yes

hald.c:669: hal 0.5.11
hald.c:678: Will daemonize
hald.c:679: Becoming a daemon

afterwards the floppy runs, the keyboard starts blinking and that's it.
