Bug#523942: linux-image-2.6.26-2-s390 will not boot!
By the way, I have another server that runs the 64-bit version of the kernel image (linux-image-2.6.26-2-s390x), and it works fine.
Either the bug affects only the 31-bit version of the kernel, or there is an environmental difference of some kind.
