Bug#513537: linux-image-2.6.26-1-openvz-amd64: KDE42 processes hang unpredictably in uninterruptable sleep (D state)

Package: linux-image-2.6.26-1-openvz-amd64
Version: 2.6.26-13
Severity: important

G'day. I am running KDE42 from experimental, and am experiencing problems with several
of their processes hanging in uninterruptable sleep. This generally doesn't seem to
cause any kernel messages, but on one occasion I received the traces that follow.

The applications that hang routinely are plasma and krunner, both of which are involved
in on-screen display. When they hang they can't be killed, and they have not recovered
after waiting for anything up to a couple of hours.

This occurs regardless of the use of OpenVZ VE environments, although the VZ modules
are loaded. The trigger is unpredictable: there is no specific kernel, or other,
interaction that seems to trigger them specifically.

It is worth noting that the traces are inotify, and that the filesystem stack is:
  XFS > LVM > dm_crypt > MD (RAID1) > { SATA AHCI, IDE PIIX }
So, there are quite a few layers involved, including encryption / decryption of
anything that touches disk.

Obviously, this kernel has both the OpenVZ and the non-free NVIDIA driver loaded, and the
applications in question are graphical, and presumably using the NVIDIA components, at
least indirectly, through talking to the X server.

The X server itself doesn't hang, and everything else continues to work: just the two
or three applications that have hung stop, and refuse to continue.

So, normally I wouldn't bother to report this on such a tainted kernel, but the traces
I received are from a completely unrelated area: inotify hangs, which both of the
applications make use of.

I think this is probably an upstream bug, if anything, but I don't know how to forward
it directly from the Debian BTS myself[1], and I don't know if y'all want to track
bugs on an NVIDIA tainted kernel.

Finally, I am still trying to reproduce this with any sort of actual debugging information
since the usual hang is completely unresponsive: no strace or gdb, on information on what
the kernel stack looks like and no backtrace.

If I do manage to identify that this is, again, a failure in the same area I will happily
come back and try to reproduce it without the non-free driver; until then I can't see
much gain.

If y'all have any suggestions for how to obtain a kernel stack trace for the processes
I would love to hear it, as it would be really good to debug this. Unfortunately, the
hardware (T61p ThinkPad) doesn't have serial hardware or I would try a kernel debugger...

Regards,
	Daniel

     how to do this.
