I had no /boot/grub/menu.lst
(because I removed grub2 and reinstalled grub via grub-install.
dpkg-reconfigure grub did not give me a menu.lst)
So I decided to reinstall the current kernel 2.6.25 via Synaptic.
The installation stopped with a prompt"
Could not find /boot/grub/menu.lst file. Would you like
/boot/grub/menu.lst generated for you (y/N)
I answered y
but the installation stalled. There were no further messages. I had to
force Synaptic to close
