Bug#364079: linux-image-2.6.15-1-486: Missing dependency on udev version introduced in 2.6.15-8
Package: linux-image-2.6.15-1-486
Severity: important
linux-image-2.6.15-1-486 version 2.6.15-8 seems to require a version
of udev which is >0.85 and <=0.89. I installed etch using the
beta-2 debian installer (this installs version 2.6.15-7 of the kernel
package, and version 0.85 of the udev package). Then I
aptitude-upgrade'd, which installed the new kernel version (2.6.15-8),
but did not upgrade udev as, apparently, a new dependency for udev was
introduced.
The result was an unbootable system, because the kernel did not have
the devices for the hard disks (/dev/hda etc.), and so could not mount
the root filesystem. The boot process stalled with a
"waiting for root filesystem" message.
I used the installation disk in rescue mode to open a shell in the
system and run aptitude dist-upgrade, which upgraded udev to 0.89,
and this fixed the problem.
Note: The "system information" below is copied by hand, as the system
I'm using now is not the system where the problem occurred.
