BIOS is the latest version.  I didn't mention it, but my mobo is an MSI K8N 
Neo4 Platinum, CPU is an Athlon64 X2 4200+.  I also disabled CPU spread 
spectrum in the BIOS, since some people report that that can interfere 
with timing.  It didn't help.

It would be useful to run another OS for a few days on this host, to see if 
the problem occurs there too.  But I don't have another OS installed, and 
this host is my gateway and file server so it's not easy just to switch 
OSes.  Another possibility would be to run a 32-bit Linux kernel on it for 
a while.  That could be done, but again would require a whole new OS 
installation.

I do wonder if this is a BIOS problem, since you say a BIOS upgrade fixed 
the problem for you.  I can write to MSI about it, but won't hold my 
breath for a new BIOS update to fix it :(
