Problems with 2.6-kernel on P4 dual core

Hi!
I've got a new Intel Pentium 4 dual core server installed with sarge
(3.1r1). Since the CPU is dual core I'd like to upgrade to an SMP kernel
to use them both.

When installing the kernel from
kernel-image-2.6.8-2-686-smp_2.6.8-16sarge1_i386.deb the server stops at
"Uncompressing Linux..." during reboot.
I get the same result both when installing
kernel-image-2.6.8-3-686-smp_2.6.8-16sarge2_i386.deb and
kernel-image-2.6.8-3-686_2.6.8-16sarge2_i386.deb.

I also tried compiling my own kernel using the latest source (2.6.16.1)
and I still get the same problem if I choose to compile the kernel for a
P4 CPU. If I compile the kernel for a 386 CPU it seems to work.

What could I have done wrong? Why wont the kernel unpack on this
machine? Could this be due to a hw-problem?
Has anyone else experienced the same problem?

Best regards, Jonas Mixter
