The monitor mode doesn't need newer firmware. Its available since 2.2
firmware: ipw-2.4-sniffer.fw
"May 17 2005 Changes in 1.0.4

-Updated the firmware requirement from 2.2 to 2.3 which supports monitor
mode.

So the ipw220 v 1.0.8 in the kernel is enough.
Its just the addition "CONFIG_IPW2200_MONITOR=y" to the config and:

Isn't it possible to get this into a 2.6.16 upload?

Ah, I looked into patch-2.6.16-git6 and the Kconfig addition is there.
