Could you see if this problem still exists in 2.6.14-3?

As of 2.6.14 VESA_FB is no longer modular, however this turned
out to mean that FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE needed to be manually loaded
on systems that were previously using vga=... This can be
fixed by telling the initrd generator to load FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE
on boot, however as of -3 it is built into the kernel to avoid
this problem.
