You can start with telling about your hardware, what your fstab looks like,
and where your root filesystem is. output of lspci and content /proc/cpuinfo
and /etc/fstab are welcome.

I kind of suspect that your root filesystem has no explicit filesystem choice,
but auto, so changing this auto to ext3 or whatever your filesystem is should
solve the problem.
