This happens only for root on a crypted device with a keyfile other than 'none'.

If I read initrd-tools correctly, it will run /keyscripts/*
(not sure where it gets them, not sure where its documented)
but it will ignore the keyfile field in /etc/crypttab.

When booting with initrd-tools, do you have to enter a passphrase to unlock the
root disk?

If so, there's probably a typo in /etc/crypttab that was not detected by initrd-tools,
and we can close this report.

Otherwise, could you describe how you feed the key to cryptsetup?

We'll then need to find a way to do that in yaird, preferably one that
works in mkinitramfs as well.
