Most probably you have a corrupted > filesystem. Thanks for the quick response, it turns out that you were quite right. A reiserfsck found and fixed a few problems on my root partition, and after that I was able to complete the upgrade. Unfortunately I didn't think ahead to take an image of the partition, so this means that now I'm also unable to reproduce the bug :-( Cameron.
