Bug#282269: Which problems did you observe without -ffreestanding?

I'd agree that -ffreestanding would make sense, but at least in Linus' 
tree I don't see this flag on mips.

And I see neither s390 currently including libgcc nor the architectures 
already including libgcc using -ffreestanding.
