Bug#280746: aic79xx doesn't connect to motherboard adapter

Package: kernel-image-2.6.8-9-em64t-p4-smp
Version: 2.6.8-5

boxx:~# uname -a
Linux boxx 2.6.8-9-em64t-p4-smp #1 SMP Thu Oct 7 16:01:47 CEST 2004 x86_64 GNU/Linux

boxx:~# lspci | grep -i Adaptec

boxx:~# lsmod | grep aic
aic79xx 266588 0
scsi_mod 132992 3 aic79xx,sd_mod,libata

boxx:~# ls /proc/scsi

i.e. after unloading with "rmmod" and a manual reload with "modprobe"
the adapter itself still doesn't seem to be visible.
No hint appears in /var/log/messages.

No problems with 2.4 kernels.
No problems with 2.6 kernels from Feodora.
