Did you look at the various log files?

- /var/log/auth.log
- /var/log/ssdm.log
- /var/log/user.log

come to my mind. I'd check for any updated log files in /var/log after a 
failed login attempt. Probably like this: find /var/log --mmin -3

Also did you test user login on a tty?

Also if you are using SDDM from experimental, maybe downgrading to the one 
in unstable may help? However here 0.21.0-3 works nicely, except for not 
loading the theme I would like to use.
