I managed to get kdeconnect to work between my laptop and my phone by

Any ideas?

Looks like a different problem. The protocol isn't failing. I'm simply
not even seeing the other devices excpet wifi-to-wifi.
I had the exact same experience a couple of week ago. I even removed
kdeconnect from my Debian system and my phone and started over to no avail.
But at some point kdeconnect on the phone got udated and it started working...

Even more weird is the fact that both the phone and my machine could see other
phones or even other machines (at work), but could not see each other :-/

In my case the problem has been around since I first heard of kdeconnect many months ago. I hasn't worked on either of the two phones I tried, except that it did work connecting my phone to my laptop via wifi.
