AFAICT (but don't quote me - I'm no expert in this area), it was to do
with the libegl1 & libegl1-glvnd-nvidia packages. Dependencies are on
"one or other". The trouble seems to come about when one is removed,
and the other isn't yet installed. It can leave your system in a weird
state.
Fortunately, using synaptic (and forewarned by you guys¹), I was able to
choose a suitable upgrade path, such that 'Bad Things'™ didn't happen.
