Did you find a solution to this problem?
I've experienced this problem with:
Debian Jessie -- KDE4 -- Lenovo X230
Debian Strech -- KDE4 & KDE5 -- Sony FM111
I also find that on Debian Stretch KDE4 & KDE5 the applet reports incorrect battery state, says "charging" while
/sys/bus/acpi/drivers/battery/PNP0C0A:00/power_supply/BAT1
reports that the battery is discharging.
