Yes, I tried with MATE.  Both for Sid amd64 natively, and Jessie amd64
in a VM.  [I had just loaded MATE again the other day, because I find I
like using it.  I normally use KDE but Sid was updated to Plasma 5 and I
find it's a bit different than KDE4 was.]

I haven't tried it under any other DEs/WMs so far.  I was focusing on
MATE because that's where the issue was seen.

That's possible.  I recently had a machine that was having a lot of
unexplained Segfaults and hangs, and memtest86+ showed that there was a
section of memory that had errors.  There's nothing in this report that
makes me suspect that's the issue specifically, but if you could run
memtest86+ and let it complete one full run that would be good as it
would likely rule out a memory hardware issue.
